Key takeaways

  • 1A fair 2026 benchmark for a child's first lessons: US $20–30/hour, UK £15–25/hour, UAE AED 80–110/hour, India ₹375–750 per group session.
  • 2Coach title is the single biggest price driver: untitled coaches charge a third or less of what IMs and GMs charge in every market we checked.
  • 3Online lessons run roughly half the price of in-person in the US (average $25 vs $60 per hour, Superprof data).
  • 4Most academies hide their prices behind contact forms. ChessWize publishes everything: ₹375–₹1,000 per session, refunds on unused sessions.

How Much Do Chess Lessons Cost? Global Prices for Kids’ Coaching (2026)#

By Coach Hrdyansh Pandey · Last updated 16 July 2026

Chess lessons for kids cost roughly $20–100 per hour in the United States, £15–60 in the United Kingdom, AED 80–325 per hour in the UAE, and ₹190–6,250 per session in India, as of July 2026. Coach credentials, group size, and online versus in-person delivery explain almost all of the spread.

This guide publishes the real numbers with dated sources — including ChessWize’s own full price list, because I think hiding prices behind “book a call” forms wastes parents’ time.

Key facts (all prices verified 16 July 2026 unless noted):

  • The average US chess lesson costs about $50/hour; online-only lessons average $25/hour (Superprof US pricing guide, updated 11 December 2025).
  • Typical UK rates are £20–30/hour, with marketplace averages as low as £16 per lesson on Superprof UK and £22/hour on NiceTutor.
  • Dubai/UAE group classes cluster around AED 250–400 per month; private tutors average AED 90/hour on Superprof UAE.
  • Indian group classes run ₹1,500–6,000 per month for 8 sessions (ChessWize India market survey, published 4 May 2026).
  • ChessWize’s published prices: ₹375 per group session, ₹550 two-on-one, ₹1,000 for 1:1 with a FIDE-rated coach — about $3.90–$10.40 at the mid-market rate of ≈₹96 per US dollar (xe.com, 16 July 2026).
  • Lichess is completely free — every feature, no paid tier — so daily practice between lessons can cost nothing.

What do chess lessons cost in the US?#

Chess lessons in the US average about $50 per hour, with beginner-level coaches at $20–30, intermediate coaches around $55, and advanced or titled coaches at $70–150 per hour; elite grandmaster coaching can exceed $200 per hour. These figures come from Superprof’s US pricing guide (updated 11 December 2025, verified 16 July 2026).

Format changes the number sharply. Superprof’s data puts online private lessons at $15–150/hour with a $25 average, in-person lessons at $30–250/hour averaging about $60, and group lessons at $10–60 per child per session. On the Outschool marketplace, group chess classes for kids typically list at $10–36 per class and 1:1 tutoring at $24–58 per session (verified 16 July 2026). Big-city rates (New York, San Francisco) sit at the top of every range.

What do chess lessons cost in the UK?#

UK chess lessons typically cost £20–30 per hour, with London commanding a premium. Marketplace averages are lower: Superprof UK reports an average of £16 per lesson (from £15/hour), and NiceTutor lists lessons from £10 with a £22/hour average. These platform figures were search-verified on 16 July 2026 rather than fetched from a single static page, so treat them as directional.

Titled coaching costs more everywhere in the UK. Specialist services list masters and grandmasters from £40/hour (chess-lessons.co.uk), and top-rated coaches at £50–150/hour (Chess Coaching Services Ltd.) — both search-verified 16 July 2026. Superprof’s city averages ranged from £12–14/hour in Liverpool and Birmingham up to £30 in London, so where you live matters nearly as much as who teaches.

What do chess lessons cost in India?#

Indian chess coaching for kids costs ₹1,500–6,000 per month for group classes (8 sessions) and ₹4,000–50,000+ per month for 1:1 coaching depending on the coach’s title, which works out to roughly ₹190–6,250 per session. These are the market ranges from our detailed India cost breakdown, published 4 May 2026.

India is the value outlier in global chess coaching. A FIDE-rated Indian coach teaching online often charges less per hour than an untitled hobbyist coach in the US or UK, because Indian academies price in rupees against an Indian cost base. That is exactly why overseas families increasingly hire India-based coaches online — the same coaching depth at a fraction of the local rate. The full India guide covers hidden costs, annual budgets, and scholarships in detail.

What do chess classes cost in the UAE?#

Kids’ chess classes in the UAE typically cost AED 150–630 per month for group programmes, with the Coursetakers.ae aggregator reporting an average course fee of AED 360 (verified 16 July 2026). Private tutors on Superprof UAE average AED 90 per hour, with listings from about AED 80.

Two dated Dubai examples show the format split clearly (both search-verified 16 July 2026): Advanced Chess Academy lists online group classes at AED 250/month versus AED 400/month in-person, and online private lessons from AED 100 per class versus AED 200 in-person. Royal Chess Coaching Academy lists group lessons from AED 110/hour and titled private coaching at AED 187–325/hour depending on whether the coach is an FM, IM, or GM.

Are online chess lessons cheaper than in-person coaching?#

Yes, consistently. In the US, online lessons average $25/hour against roughly $60/hour in-person (Superprof, December 2025); Dubai academies charge AED 250 versus AED 400 monthly for the same group programme delivered online versus in a venue; and in India, in-person metro coaching adds a 20–40% premium over online rates.

The reasons are structural, not a quality signal: online coaches carry no venue cost and no travel time, and compete in a global pool rather than a neighbourhood one. Whether the format suits your child is a separate question — our guide on whether online chess coaching is worth it covers when online works and when it does not.

What actually drives the price of a chess lesson?#

Four factors set almost every chess-lesson price: the coach’s playing credentials, group size, session frequency (package discounts), and geography. Coach title is the biggest lever — in every market we checked in July 2026, titled coaches (FM/IM/GM) list at a multiple of untitled coaches’ rates, up to ten times at the GM end.

  • Coach credentials. US untitled coaches: $20–50/hour; GMs: $100–200+ (Superprof, Dec 2025). Dubai: AED 187–325/hour scaling with the coach’s FIDE title. India: ₹500–1,000 per 1:1 session with an untitled 1600–1900-rated coach versus ₹3,125–6,250 with a GM.
  • Group vs 1:1. A group seat costs 30–50% of a private hour in every market above. For most beginners that trade is favourable — see group vs private chess classes for when each format wins.
  • Frequency and packages. Bulk booking discounts of 10–20% are standard across academies (ChessWize’s own tiers discount 10% at 24 sessions, 15% at 48, 20% at 96).
  • Geography. London, New York, and San Francisco price at the top of their national ranges; India-based online coaching prices below every Western market.

What hidden costs should parents budget for?#

Coaching fees are only part of a chess family’s real spend: federation registration, tournament entries, platform subscriptions, equipment, and travel come on top. None of these appear on an academy’s price page, so budget for them before committing.

The sourced examples we can publish: AICF registration in India is about ₹300/year (aicf.in), Chess.com premium runs ₹2,000–5,000/year (our India survey, May 2026), and ChessKid Gold is about $10/month per child (corroborated via ChessKid’s support centre and a licensed reseller, 16 July 2026 — the membership page itself is not machine-readable). Using Lichess for homework removes the subscription cost entirely, since it is genuinely free with no paid tier. Tournament entry fees, kit, and travel vary too much by country and ambition to give honest global numbers; the India cost guide itemises them for Indian families.

When is a cheap option fine, and when should you pay more?#

Cheap is fine for beginners; pay more only when your child has outgrown the level of the coaching, not before. A motivated child can go from zero to roughly 1200–1400 level on free platforms plus a low-cost group class. Premium 1:1 coaching earns its price once weaknesses become individual rather than general.

Concretely: below about 1000–1200 rating strength, a structured group class with a competent coach teaches the same fundamentals a GM would, at a fraction of the price. Above that, progress depends on someone diagnosing your child’s specific mistakes — that is where 1:1 with a stronger (often titled) coach starts returning the extra money. Paying GM rates for a 6-year-old beginner is the most common overspend we see; the reverse error is keeping a tournament-active 1500-rated child in a 10-student beginner batch to save money.

What does ChessWize charge?#

ChessWize publishes its full price list: group classes cost ₹375 per session, two-on-one classes ₹550 per session, and 1:1 coaching with a FIDE-rated coach ₹1,000 per session, with a starter pack of 8 classes for ₹2,500 (₹313 per session). All prices are on our courses page — no call required.

Package discounts are 10% for 24 sessions, 15% for 48, and 20% for 96. The demo class (30 minutes, with a level assessment) is free, and unused sessions are refunded if your child stops — no forms to fight. At the mid-market exchange rate of about ₹96 per US dollar (xe.com, 16 July 2026), that is roughly $3.90 per group session and $10.40 per 1:1 session — well under the ≈$25/hour US online average, because our FIDE-rated coaches teach from India. Classes serve ages 5–15, live (never recorded lectures), in English, Hindi, and Bengali.

Here is the nine-provider price snapshot, verified 16 July 2026. Where a provider’s pricing page could not be read directly (some render only in a browser), the figure is marked ≈ and the corroborating source type is stated — treat those as directional, not exact.
