Chess is played in Bihar schools and through organised district and state competition. A regular coach can provide continuity between playing opportunities, while over-the-board events remain useful for practical experience. Bihar's competitive circuit runs under the All Bihar Chess Association, which conducts the annual Bihar State Championship along with FIDE-rated open, rapid and blitz state events. Madhubani-born Grandmaster Sriram Jha, who earned the GM title in 2010 and won India's national rapid championship in 2014, is the best-known player born in the state.

Online chess classes in Bihar: common questions
Does national registration also cover state registration?
Treat them as separate checks. AICF decided on 26 March 2023 to delink player registration from state and district registration. The Bihar Open 2026 prospectus required Indian players to have AICF registration for 2025-2026 and Bihar players to have ABCA registration for that period too. Read the chosen event's own requirements before entering.
Were there state events for children younger than eleven?
Yes. The Bihar State Under-9 Boys' and Girls' Chess Championship began on 30 April 2026 at Pleasant Valley School in Sandalpur, Patna. There was also an Under-11 Open and Girls championship at Kumar Progressive School in Lakhisarai from 15 to 17 May 2026. These are dated examples of separate age-group competitions.

Do you run an offline centre in Patna, and can online chess work well?
ChessWize has no physical centre in Patna or elsewhere in Bihar; all coaching is live online. The child works directly with a coach who can watch games and correct thinking during the session. Local school play or organised tournaments can be used separately for in-person competition and familiarity with a physical chess clock.
Is Hindi available for young chess learners across Bihar?
