Why Punjab families choose online coaching
Punjab has a network of busy cities, education centres, and smaller towns connected by frequent road travel. Families often arrange several after-school activities, making a predictable home-based lesson useful.
Online coaching gives families the same live format regardless of whether a suitable local academy is nearby. It removes travel while preserving direct questions, game review, and personal feedback from a regular coach.

Where to play
Players from Punjab
From online class to a first tournament
- Complete the single AICF player registration, in force from 1 April 2021, so the same record is shared with the Punjab State Chess Association and the child's district unit.
- Ask the state association which age sections are accepting entries and check the child's date of birth against the event notice.
- Treat a district championship as the first over-the-board test, then use a state age-group event if the child already handles a full session with a clock.
- If the child will try rapid, rehearse 25 minutes plus a 10-second increment online, because that was the FIDE time control for the 2025-26 state rapid in Mohali.
Good to know
- AICF says player registration is mandatory and should be finished well before any tournament, not on the morning of round one.
- The September 2026 National Under-15 dates came from a tentative calendar; ask the state body about qualification and confirmed schedules for later editions.
- Amity University in Sector 82, Mohali, was the listed venue for the 2025-26 state rapid; confirm the venue for any other event separately.

Honestly, I was skeptical about online chess coaching.
“Aadvik hated sitting still for anything, and I thought a Zoom class would last two weeks max. It's been six months. Last Sunday his class teacher called just to ask what changed — his attention in maths has jumped. He now does his puzzles before I'm up. Coach Arjun has the patience I don't.”

She used to cry after every loss. Not anymore.
“Anika was playing 'casually' on chess.com and hanging pieces every game. First month the coach just drilled Checks-Captures-Threats. The dashboard is what sold me though. I don't know chess, but I can see exactly what she covered each week. Her play sharpened on its own by week eight.”

Coach Ankit has been amazing for my 8-year-old. He’s super friendly and explains chess rules in a way kids actually get. My son looks forward to every Chesswize class now. He motivates him to do better without any pressure, and I’ve seen fast improvement in both his game and confidence. Highly recommend Ankit for young beginners!

Chess is played through schools, colleges, and local competitions in Punjab, with organised activity supported at state level. Children can build knowledge in weekly lessons and test it separately in available over-the-board settings. Punjab's competitive circuit runs under the AICF-affiliated Punjab State Chess Association, whose annual state championships (including the Punjab State Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships held at Amity University, Mohali) act as selection events for the nationals. The state produced its first International Master, Dushyant Sharma, in 2022, followed by Jalandhar's IM Namitbir Singh Walia in 2025.

Online chess classes in Punjab: common questions
What registration does AICF require before a Punjab tournament?
AICF tells new players that AICF players registration is mandatory and should be done well before participating in any tournament. From 1 April 2021 there is only a single AICF registration on a pan-India basis, shared with the state association and the player's district association. In Punjab that state body is the Punjab State Chess Association, listed by AICF at C-104 Hamilton Towers, Nakodar Road, Jalandhar City.
Which 2026 Punjab age-group championships are on the public listing, and where were they?
A Punjab tournament listing scheduled the State Under-11 Open and Girls Championship in Barnala on 30-31 May 2026, the Under-13 Open and Girls Championship at Chawla Restaurant, Near ITI, Budhlad, Mansa, on 27-28 June 2026, and the Under-15 Open and Girls Championship in Kapurthala on 5 July 2026. AICF's tentative calendar separately assigned the National Under-15 championship to Punjab on 14-22 September 2026.
What can a child learn about Punjab's International Master milestones?
The Tribune recorded Punjab's first International Master title on 1 February 2022 and later reported the state's second International Master, with both players from Jalandhar. The players section names them with their title details. You could use these milestones to introduce a child to chess titles, while keeping their own immediate focus on practice and an event suited to their age and experience.
What are the fees for children’s online chess classes in Punjab?
Classes begin from ₹375 per class for ages 5–15. Families can choose live 1:1 coaching or a group capped at six, in Hindi or English, with the same coach every week. Parents receive a weekly WhatsApp report. The 30-minute demo is free without payment. Monthly plans: full refund within 48 hours of enrolling, then a pro-rated refund minus sessions attended before the third session. After the third session, no refund for the current billing period; cancel to stop future charges. Term packages (3 or 6 months): pro-rated refund minus sessions attended within 7 days of enrolling. After 7 days, no refund; remaining sessions can be completed within the term.
Is ChessWize available offline in Punjab, or is the coaching online only?
ChessWize teaches live online only and has no physical centre in Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala, or elsewhere in Punjab. The coach is present and responsive throughout each session. Local school or community play can still give children valuable face-to-face games, while online lessons provide the regular teaching schedule.
Can Punjab families choose Hindi for a young beginner?
Yes. Hindi and English coaching are available, and parents can choose the option that helps their child communicate most comfortably. For a beginner, the coach can introduce board coordinates, legal moves, checkmates, and thinking habits at a suitable pace. The small batch cap prevents a five-year-old from disappearing inside a large online class.
