What this Patiala class is
ChessWize is a live online chess class for children aged 5–15, offered to families in Patiala. A named coach teaches on a video call and shared digital board; this is not an in-person branch.
ChessWize is online only and has no local centre in Patiala.
Who the format fits
It fits families with a beginner through a rated player who can keep a recurring IST time agreed after the level check, want a group capped at six or a one-to-one lesson, and want one regular coach. It does not fit a family that needs a walk-in classroom in Patiala.
Experienced chess coaching for Patiala families, built on weekly structure
Families in Patiala take structured learning seriously, and chess deserves the same discipline you already bring to school subjects. Families in Patiala take structured learning seriously, and chess deserves the same discipline you already bring to school subjects. ChessWize runs live online instead: your child trains from home with a coach, in a fixed weekly slot, with a written plan behind every lesson.
Your child joins a skill-matched batch of 4-6 students or works privately through our 1:1 Analyst Protocol, with roadmaps for ages 5-8, 9-12 and 13-15 plus beginner, intermediate, advanced, tournament-prep and rating-improvement tracks. Coaches such as Hrdyansh Pandey and Tarun Gupta lead these sessions. Our promise is simple: Same coach every session - no rotation. The mentor who maps your child's first weak spots will still be there when those spots close.
You stay close to the work through a weekly WhatsApp report for every student. One mother who does not play chess herself told us, "I can see exactly what she covered each week", and that visibility is precisely what the report exists to give. Across the programme we have coached 1,000 students, and our 21 Google reviews stand at 5.0.
Start with a complimentary 30-min demo, then the starter pack of ₹2,500 for 8 classes if you like what you see. After that, regular plans run from ₹375 to ₹1,000 per class, with the exact rate set by the plan you choose, and monthly plans refund within 48 hours of enrolling. Evening windows reach 4:30-9:30 PM IST, so chess can sit after homework without a commute.
Chess in Patiala: school halls and the district open
Patiala children already meet over the board in district and school events. Chess-Results lists the Patiala District Chess Championship 2025 Open. Modern Senior Secondary School hosted an inter-school tournament on 30 July 2025 with Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 sections, and a local report counted 200 students from 18 schools. Playways Sr. Sec. School held an Under-11 championship on 20 April 2025. Those rooms are what a parent can ask about after online practice.

From online class to a first tournament
- Ask the class teacher whether the school participates in district chess and what the entry process is, using the 2026 Philkhana event as a past example.
- For a younger child, ask about under-11 opportunities and their age cut-offs, using the 20 April 2025 event at Playways Sr. Sec. School as an example.
- Finish AICF player registration well before the Patiala District Chess Championship Open or any school event, because AICF says that step is mandatory ahead of a tournament.
- Practise finishing a game on a physical board, and ask whether the chosen event requires a clock or written moves.

How classes run
Your child keeps the same coach in a supervised small group, and a parent can sit in on any lesson. Read the full policy on the child safety page.
At home you need a laptop or tablet with a webcam and stable internet. Classes run in the browser. Setup details are on the online chess classes page.
The first meeting is a free 30-minute level check. Paid classes start only after you enrol and agree a recurring time.
The four published commitments

Refund wording is on the refund policy.
Eleven checks to make before enrolling
Each answer below is tied to the section that carries its proof, so a parent can verify the detail rather than rely on a slogan.
-
Check 1
Who teaches my child, and are they rated?
Your child trains with experienced coaches: Hrdyansh Pandey, Tarun Gupta, and Aryan Pal. Live sessions mean the teaching happens in real time, and we match the coach to your child's level, from first moves through advanced tournament work.
See coaches -
Check 2
How many children share the coach?
Batches hold 4-6 similarly-rated students, so every child gets speaking time and real games against peers at their own strength. Twelve-week synchronized batches keep the group stable, and intense peer-play plus group calculation sit at the core. If you want undivided attention instead, the 1:1 Analyst Protocol gives your child the coach alone, targeting the highest-value gap in their game.
See class size -
Check 3
Is there a real curriculum from beginner to rated play?
Yes, and it is written down. Roadmaps run from beginner through intermediate and advanced, with dedicated tracks for ages 5-8, 9-12 and 13-15, plus tournament-prep, rating-improvement and online summer camps. A beginner works from legal moves to a complete game; an intermediate student learns candidate moves and positional clues; advanced players convert training into events. Every stage names what comes next.
See the curriculum -
Check 4
How will I know it is working?
You receive a weekly WhatsApp report for every student, so you always know what was taught and what comes next. Coaches track each child against the roadmap, and homework targets errors from the previous class. Even if you have never played yourself, the report shows the week's idea, the practice set and where your child stands.
See progress reports -
Check 5
Is it safe, and can I see the classes?
Classes run live on video, and your child attends from home, so learning happens under your roof rather than at a centre you never see. Batches hold at most 4-6 similarly-rated children with the same coach each week. The weekly WhatsApp report covers what was taught, and because the class happens at home, you can stay in the room or nearby.
Read safety policy -
Check 6
Can we try before paying?
Yes. Book the complimentary 30-min level check before you commit; there is no charge for it. The coach places your child on the roadmap, you see the teaching style, and your child tests how learning on video feels. Ongoing classes only start after that, if you decide the fit is right.
See the level check -
Check 7
What if we stop?
Patiala monthly enrolment allows a full refund within 48 hours of enrolling, then a pro-rated refund minus sessions attended until the 3rd session, after which the current month is not refunded but cancelling ends later billing. Leftover term classes can still be used once 7 days have passed.
See refund terms -
Check 8
Will the timings fit our week?
Coach availability spans morning, midday and evening on IST: 9:30 AM-1:30 PM IST at the earliest, 12:30-5:30 PM IST around midday, and evening windows reaching 4:30-9:30 PM IST. A slot can therefore sit before school or after homework, and siblings with staggered school times can each take a different window. One fixed weekly slot keeps the same coach.
See class times -
Check 9
What does it cost, exactly?
Our starter pack costs ₹2,500 for 8 classes. Regular plans that follow range from ₹375 to ₹1,000 per class, depending on which plan suits your child. We quote those two rates separately because they are different products, and the level check tells you which track fits before you pay anything.
See fees -
Check 10
Is there a path to tournaments?
Chess-Results listed the Patiala District Chess Championship 2025, and district school chess for under-14, under-17 and under-19 boys was organised at the School of Eminence Philkhana. Ask the Punjab State Chess Association about later age-group notices, and confirm that event's requirements. On average, students reach a first tournament in about four months of lessons.
See results -
Check 11
What do I have to do at home?
You do not need to play chess yourself. At home, practice stays short and specific: a younger child might set up the board or solve two familiar positions in five to ten focused minutes, while older students keep a small error log and save one game a week to bring to class. Send a photo of a confusing position to the coach, and the next lesson starts from it.

Honestly, I was skeptical about online chess coaching.
“Aadvik hated sitting still for anything, and I thought a Zoom class would last two weeks max. It's been six months. Last Sunday his class teacher called just to ask what changed — his attention in maths has jumped. He now does his puzzles before I'm up. Coach Arjun has the patience I don't.”

She used to cry after every loss. Not anymore.
“Anika was playing 'casually' on chess.com and hanging pieces every game. First month the coach just drilled Checks-Captures-Threats. The dashboard is what sold me though. I don't know chess, but I can see exactly what she covered each week. Her play sharpened on its own by week eight.”

I am extremely happy with ChessWize Chess Academy. The coaching is very structured, child-friendly, and delivered with amazing patience. Each session is interactive and helps kids build strong fundamentals along with confidence. The best part is the personal attention given to every student, which truly makes a big difference in their progress. The academy also celebrates students’ achievements, motivating them even more. I strongly recommend ChessWize to anyone looking for quality chess training.

Read on Google →Why the online format fits Patiala
Patiala is the historic capital of a former princely state and remains one of Punjab's principal education towns, anchored by institutions such as Punjabi University and a dense ring of schools. The city's slower pace compared with Ludhiana still sits on a serious academic reputation.
Specialised coaching is thinner outside the biggest metros, so Patiala families often face a long drive or a compromise coach. Live online classes bring that level of instruction into Rajpura Road or Urban Estate homes without leaving the district.
Local chess context
University-town culture here values structured learning over casual hobby clubs. A planned chess curriculum with the same coach each week matches how Patiala parents already approach school and tuition.
Patiala's identity as a university and schooling town means parents already pay for structured tuition — online chess matches that expectation with a fixed coach and weekly report, rather than treating the game as a loose hobby club with no continuity.
Online and offline choices
A good local offline mentor is worth keeping if your child thrives face-to-face and travel is short. Online helps when coaching is scarce inside the city, when siblings have staggered school times, or when you want accountable weekly feedback without a drive toward a larger hub.

Questions from parents in Patiala
How can a parent follow up on the Patiala district open?
The Patiala District Chess Championship 2025 Open has a Chess-Results listing last updated on 25 May 2025. Ask the Punjab State Chess Association, an AICF affiliate, where to find notices for later district events and how to check eligibility. AICF instructs players to finish registration well before a tournament; registration alone should not be treated as confirmation of entry.
Which Patiala schools have already hosted junior chess?
Modern Senior Secondary School hosted an inter-school tournament on 30 July 2025 with Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 sections, drawing 200 students from 18 schools according to Royal Patiala. The same school's announcements page records an Under-11 Chess Championship 2025 at Playways Sr. Sec. School on 20 April 2025. District school chess for under-14, under-17 and under-19 boys was organised at the School of Eminence Philkhana.
What should a Patiala beginner practise before a first hall event?
Start by checking the chosen event's age cut-off and rules. Patiala records include an under-11 championship at Playways and Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 sections at Modern Senior Secondary School's inter-school event. Practise a complete game on a board, then add the clock setting and notation practice the organiser recommends. Arrange AICF registration in advance rather than leaving it until arrival.
How much is online chess for school kids in Patiala?
Fees begin at ₹375 per class. Format is live 1:1 or a small batch capped at six children. The first 30-minute level check is free, families can pause for exams, holidays or travel with remaining sessions kept, and parents get a weekly WhatsApp summary. No physical ChessWize centre exists in Patiala.
Why choose online if Patiala already has schools and local tutors?
Schools teach many subjects well; junior chess coaching is still limited outside metros. Live online access keeps the mentor quality high and the coach consistent every week. Local tutors remain fine for casual play — online is for families who want structured progression.
Is there a free trial before we commit in Patiala?
Yes. ChessWize offers a free 30-minute demo or level check with no payment. Use it to see coaching style, language (English/Hindi), and whether your child settles on video. Only book ongoing classes if the fit feels right after that session.
What does my child need at home for the online classes?
A device with a stable internet connection and a quiet place to think is enough to begin. In the first sessions a young child may want a parent close by, after which they work directly with the coach. Older students should keep a notebook for an error log, and saving one game a week gives the coach real evidence to review.
Do we need to travel anywhere in Patiala for the coaching?
No. There is no ChessWize centre in the city, and classes happen live on video from your home, so the drive families make for specialist coaching simply disappears. If your child later enters an offline tournament, the coach helps you interpret the event notice, though the organiser's own rules stay the final word on reporting time and equipment.
Which language do the coaches teach in?
Coaching runs in English and Hindi, so your child can ask questions in whichever feels natural at the board. The complimentary 30-min demo lets you hear the coach's style directly and watch how your child settles on video before you decide anything about ongoing classes.
Is online coaching really better than a local club here?
If a strong local mentor already suits your child and the travel is short, keep that arrangement. Online earns its place when experienced coaching inside the city is scarce, when siblings need different time slots, or when you want accountable weekly feedback instead of a casual club where nobody tracks anything. Patiala families who already fund structured tuition for school subjects usually want the same approach for chess: a fixed coach and a weekly written report.
How long before we notice a difference at school or on the board?
Changes usually show up in two places: how your child handles a lost position, and how long they can concentrate on one problem. Progress depends on the starting level and how regularly the weekly practice gets done. The tournament-prep and rating-improvement tracks exist for families who want measurable targets, and the coach will tell you honestly at the level check where your child stands.
Will my child get a new coach if the current one does not suit?
We keep the same mentor with your child week after week; rotating teachers is exactly what this arrangement rules out. If a genuine mismatch appears, tell us and we will discuss the placement openly rather than quietly swapping. In practice, the level check is where fit gets tested first, which is why we insist on it before any payment.
What actually happens in the complimentary 30-min demo?
The coach runs a short level check on the board: your child plays a few positions, the coach watches how they think, and you get a plain-language read on strengths and gaps. Nothing is sold during the session, and there is no payment attached. You leave knowing the placement, the suggested track and whether video learning suits your child.
Do I have to sit next to my child during every class?
No, though younger children often settle faster with a parent nearby for the opening minutes. After that, most children work directly with the coach while you get on with your evening. Because the class happens at home on video, you can step in whenever you want, and the weekly WhatsApp report keeps you informed without needing to watch every session.
When are the classes held during a typical school week?
Coach windows run through the day on IST, from a 9:30 AM start in the morning to late sessions closing at 9:30 PM, so a slot can sit before school, in the afternoon, or after homework and dinner. Choose one fixed time each week and your child keeps it, which keeps the batch and the coach stable too.
Who answers questions between classes if something confuses my child?
Send it to the coach on WhatsApp, ideally with a photo of the position or the game link. A rule argument at the dinner table or a move nobody could explain makes excellent lesson material, and the next class starts from that exact spot. You are never expected to resolve chess questions yourself before messaging.
