Fremont parents can choose a semester academy, a Friday drop-in club, a chess center, free library sessions, or a program that lists Fremont addresses. King’s Land Chess Education Center publishes fall groups at its Warm Springs campus. Bay Area Chess runs a Friday club at Weibel Elementary for $30 a session. NorCal House of Chess keeps a center on Washington Boulevard, and Golden Bay Chess Foundation offers free tutoring at Fremont libraries. ChessWize, which publishes this guide, teaches online only and has no center in Fremont, CA. It appears once below, clearly labeled as the online option.

The online option: ChessWize

ChessWize, the academy that publishes this guide, is an online-only chess academy for children. It has no centre in Fremont, CA, so it is not one of the in-person options in this guide. Classes are taught live over video by a coach, and a child keeps the same coach every week.

Online tends to fit when

  • the weekly drive is the thing that keeps breaking the routine
  • your child needs a coach at their level, not the nearest batch
  • cost per class matters more than the clubhouse

In-person tends to fit when

  • your child will not sit in front of a screen for a whole class
  • a strong club or academy is a short drive away
  • playing other children across a real board is the main goal

In-person chess classes and clubs in Fremont, CA#

  • Bay Area Chess, Friday scholastic club at Weibel Elementary, 45135 South Grimmer Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539, Room 33, next to the staff parking lot. The page says it is not a Weibel-only class. Ages are 5-17, new players through 1100 USCF (also described as levels 1-4). Time is 4:30-6:00 pm on Fridays in the school year, not summer. At-the-door payment is $30 per session, with no advance registration required. The page also offers buy 8 and get 2 free, tracked on site for 12 months, and says that bundle is not sold on the page. A format line mentions Room 32/33 as well as Room 33, so ask at the door. Off dates on the club page include 23 October, 30 October and 20 November 2026, plus a closure from 18 December 2026 through 1 January 2027. The same page names both 26 November and 27 November. The clubs index names 27 November, along with 23 October, 30 October and 20 November. Confirm that Friday before you drive. Pickup is 6:00 pm, and there is no parent room.

  • King’s Land Chess Education Center, 46164 Warm Springs Blvd, unit 250, Fremont, CA 94539 (168 Market Plaza). The weekly-class page dates the Fremont fall group 11 August-20 December 2026. The Fremont schedule page dates it 12 August 2026-20 December 2026. That schedule names New Beginner through Tournament Group, and the clock times are pictures without text, so no weekday is stated here. The fall fee block is 19 weeks from 12 August to 20 December 2026, prorated mid-semester. New Beginner (age 5+) is $525 for 15 lessons at $35 a week. Entry (unrated-200), Intermediate I (200-400) and Intermediate II (400-600) are $722 at $38 a week. Advanced I (600-900) is $760 at $40 a week. Advanced II, Tournament Group and Elite (from 900, 1200 and 1500 USCF) are $855 at $45 a week. New group students pay $50 once, for a bag, a shirt and materials. A sibling saves $25 off that semester. Two weekly classes are 15% off both. Make-ups are at Fremont or Pleasanton (1024 Serpentine Ln, Suite 101), which the schedule page calls 15 miles to Fremont. A free trial booking is on the weekly page. Foster City on the same fee block runs only 14 August-11 December 2026, so match a Fremont invoice to the Fremont line.

  • NorCal House of Chess, 139 Washington Boulevard, Fremont, CA 94539. The phone on the page is 415-756-1204. Homepage camp rates: $590 full day per full week, $350 half day per full week, $140 full day daily drop-in, $80 half day daily drop-in, $25 late pickup from 4:30 to 6:00 pm and lunch $8 a day. The summer-camp page titles a 2026 camp of 10 weeks, full day 8:30 am-4:30 pm and half day 8:30 am-12:00 pm or 1:00 pm-4:30 pm, and does not repeat the dollars. The classes page lists in-person fall groups, September-November, six classes a session, 6-12 children: Thursday 6:15-7:30 pm for USCF 300-1200, cap 8-10; Saturday 10:00-11:15 am for 600+ or coach approval, cap 8-10; Saturday 11:30 am-12:30 pm for beginners who know the basics, cap 8-10. No fee published on its classes page (checked 3 October 2026). Enroll links there still say November 2024 in the URL, so confirm the term is open. Later headings on that page are remote groups; use the in-person block for the Fremont center. A quads notice on the homepage is dated 20 July 2025, so it is not a current signup. The classes page names International Master Ricardo De Guzman and Ted Castro.

  • Golden Bay Chess Foundation is a 501(c)(3) run by high school students. The homepage offers free in-person tutoring and mini tournaments at the Centerville and Fremont Main libraries, typically Saturdays from about 11 am to 1 pm, with a stated focus on ages 5-12. It does not print a street for either library. The sessions are stated as free (checked 3 October 2026).

  • Castle Chess describes one-hour classes for ages 5-15. Under Our Program Locations it lists 3645 Mowry Ave, Fremont, CA 94538; 4966 Paseo Padre Pkwy # B, Fremont, CA 94555; 33330 Peace Terrace, Fremont, CA 94555; 39380 Civic Center Dr, Fremont, CA 94538; 39600 Mission Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539; 4047 Alder Ave, Fremont, CA 94536; and 46132 Warm Springs Blvd #101, Fremont, CA 94539. The same list also names sites in Newark, Milpitas, and Hayward. No fee published beside those addresses (checked 3 October 2026). A separate page sells Weekly Chess at Creative Kids in Union City for $256, Tuesdays 5:00-6:00 pm, dates printed as 8/26-12/16, with no class on 11/25. That page prints neither a year nor a street number, and 8/26, 11/25 and 12/16 fall on Tuesdays in 2025 but Wednesdays in 2026, so confirm the listing is current before paying. Students are split into beginner and intermediate groups after two weeks.

These are listed in no particular order and inclusion is not an endorsement.

What in-person chess classes cost in Fremont, CA#

Bay Area Chess prints $30 per Friday at Weibel. Eight Fridays are 8 × $30 = $240. Buying eight sessions adds two more at no extra charge, and the page does not print a bundle dollar total. The bundle is tracked on site. The Fremont club stops in summer; unused bundle classes may be used at other Bay Area Chess club locations.

King’s Land’s weekly figure and semester total match.

  • New Beginner: 15 × $35 = $525. That group is 15 lessons, not 19 weeks.
  • Entry, Intermediate I, and Intermediate II: 19 × $38 = $722.
  • Advanced I: 19 × $40 = $760.
  • Advanced II, Tournament Group, and Elite: 19 × $45 = $855.

A new group student adds $50 once, so a new beginner is $525 + $50 = $575 before a sibling discount. A second child at the $722 rate is $722 − $25 = $697 in semester tuition. The two-class offer on King’s Land’s weekly-class page is 15% off both classes, with no discounted dollar amount printed. A mid-semester start is prorated.

NorCal House of Chess: no fee published on its classes page (checked 3 October 2026). Camp rates are on the homepage and belong to the 2026 summer camp, whose week list ends with Aug 3-7. Five full drop-in days are 5 × $140 = $700, $110 above the $590 week. Five half days are 5 × $80 = $400, $50 above the $350 half-day week. Late pickup is $25, and lunch is $8 a day. The 2026 camp page matches the hours and does not restate these dollars.

Castle Chess prints $256 for the Union City series dated 8/26-12/16. It does not say per class or per series, and it prints no year, so this guide does not turn $256 into a weekly rate. No fee published beside the Fremont addresses (checked 3 October 2026).

Free and low-cost options#

Golden Bay Chess Foundation is the free option: Centerville and Fremont Main libraries, typically Saturdays about 11 am to 1 pm, ages 5-12, run by high school students, with no street printed for either branch. The cheapest published paid single visit in Fremont is $30 for one Friday at Weibel. King’s Land offers a free trial booking, not a free term. NorCal’s printed dollars are camp weeks; its weekly classes page has no fee published (checked 3 October 2026).

Tournaments and ratings for kids in California#

CalChess is the official USCF state affiliate for Northern California, in its own membership wording. Its tournaments page says scholastic events are for school-age players, usually through high school, in sections by ability, with sets usually provided and trophies as the usual prizes. The scholastic calendar on 3 October 2026 showed a community-listing disclaimer and did not name upcoming events in the page text.

Bay Area Chess does list dates, checked the same day. A US Chess membership is required except for Rising Star, a first-timers event listed on 3 October 2026, 4:45-6:15 pm, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto. Later dates on that homepage: 17-18 October, CalChess K-1 and K-6 (all sections) and K-12 non-championship sections, Santa Clara Convention Center; 14-15 November, CalChess Grade Level Championship, Sonesta Silicon Valley, Milpitas; 5-6 December, US National Junior Chess Congress, The Domain Hotel, Sunnyvale.

US Chess says a published Regular, Quick, or Blitz rating needs at least four rated games in that category. You stay unrated until a monthly list prints the number. That list is generated on the third Wednesday of the month before it becomes official. The first 25 games are provisional, shown as a rating, a slash, and the game count (the FAQ’s example is 1213/16). Its lag story uses a November 2013 event and a January 2014 list. That illustration is not a 2026 calendar. One short event can be fewer than four rated games.

How we chose and checked these options#

We included in-person chess options for children that have a public page naming a venue in or near Fremont, CA and a current schedule, fee or session date. Every fact on this page comes from the provider’s own page or an official chess federation page, opened on 3 October 2026. Fees are copied as published. Where this guide turns a monthly or session fee into a per-class figure, it shows the sum. The options are not ranked, and no provider paid to be listed. ChessWize, which publishes this guide, teaches online only and appears separately as the online option.

A coach’s checklist for choosing#

  1. Use the address on your side of Fremont. Warm Springs is King’s Land and one Castle Chess line. South Grimmer is the Friday club at Weibel. Washington Boulevard is NorCal. Castle Chess also lists Mowry, Paseo Padre, Peace Terrace, Civic Center, Alder and Mission Boulevard. Pleasanton is 15 miles to Fremont on King’s Land’s schedule page. None of these pages publish a drive time.

  2. Ask the group size before a semester payment. NorCal prints 6-12 children, with Thursday and Saturday caps of 8-10. King’s Land, Weibel and the Castle Chess Union City page do not print a cap. Union City students are split after two weeks.

  3. Ask who is in the room. NorCal’s classes page names International Master Ricardo De Guzman and Ted Castro. The Weibel page does not name the Friday coach. King’s Land’s Fremont schedule names levels, not a coach beside each level.

  4. Try a class before a semester bill. King’s Land has a free trial booking. Bay Area Chess is $30 for one Friday. Golden Bay is free. The Union City series is $256 on the page, with no trial price printed there.

  5. For a rating, use Santa Clara on 17-18 October, Milpitas on 14-15 November and Sunnyvale on 5-6 December, plus a US Chess membership, which the Bay Area Chess event site requires except for Rising Star. Confirm the November Friday at Weibel: the club page names both 26 and 27 November, and the index names 27 November.

In-person or online in Fremont, CA?#

In person, your child shares a room, a set, and a clock with other children, and you can see who is teaching. King’s Land and NorCal are ongoing classes at fixed Fremont addresses. Bay Area Chess is one Friday at a time and pauses in summer. Golden Bay keeps the trip and drops the fee, on Saturdays from about 11 am to 1 pm at a library. Warm Springs, South Grimmer and Washington Boulevard are different drives after school, and Castle Chess lists several Fremont sites rather than one campus. A lesson at home removes that drive and still runs on a club off-date or a sick day. It also removes the room of peers. ChessWize, the publisher of this guide, is the online-only option in the block above and has no Fremont center. How to weigh a room against a screen is set out in online vs offline chess classes.
