Key takeaways

  • 1The weekly academy classes with a published New Jersey campus are in Piscataway and East Windsor, and in Princeton, not at a street address inside Edison.
  • 2Chesskiddo prints $109 a month for four in-person novice classes. Kings and Queens prints $140, $180, or $240 a month on its New Jersey schedule rows.
  • 3Edison, Fords, and Princeton library sessions are the no-tuition path. Re-open the event page before you go, because dates move.
  • 4ChessWize, which publishes this guide, teaches online only and has no center in Edison.

Edison families who want a child at a real board have a weekly academy in the next towns, a Princeton studio with a printed fee, and library hours that do not print a fee. Kings and Queens Chess Academy lists in-person classes in Piscataway and East Windsor. Chesskiddo teaches at 26 Jefferson Plaza in Princeton, novice groups at $109 a month. Edison Public Library and the Fords branch in Woodbridge post children’s sessions closer to home. ChessWize, which publishes this guide, teaches online only and has no center in Edison, NJ. It is not an in-person program. It appears once below, clearly labeled as the online option.

The online option: ChessWize

ChessWize, the academy that publishes this guide, is an online-only chess academy for children. It has no centre in Edison, NJ, so it is not one of the in-person options in this guide. Classes are taught live over video by a coach, and a child keeps the same coach every week.

Online tends to fit when

  • the weekly drive is the thing that keeps breaking the routine
  • your child needs a coach at their level, not the nearest batch
  • cost per class matters more than the clubhouse

In-person tends to fit when

  • your child will not sit in front of a screen for a whole class
  • a strong club or academy is a short drive away
  • playing other children across a real board is the main goal

In-person chess classes and clubs in Edison, NJ#

  • Kings and Queens Chess Academy, in-person classes in Piscataway and East Windsor, ages 5-18. The homepage offers a free first group class, with no credit card. On 3 October 2026 the in-person schedule priced New Jersey rows at $140, $180, or $240 a month. Beginner 1 in Piscataway is Thursday 5:30-6:30 PM ET with Fred Ivens at $140 a month. Beginner 1 in East Windsor is Sunday 10:00-11:00 AM ET with Joshua Hill, also $140. Pawn 3 in Piscataway is Wednesday 7:00-8:30 PM ET at $180. Super Sundays uses 1030 Stelton Road, Suite 201, Piscataway. Private lessons are coaches from $50 a session. The homepage and the programs page do not describe the same group size, so ask which cap applies.

  • Chesskiddo, in-person groups at 26 Jefferson Plaza, Princeton, NJ 08540, Pre-K through grade 12, placed by skill. Most novice students are ages 4-7. Wednesday: 5:00-5:45 PM novice $109 a month; 5:30-6:30 PM beginner/intermediate $119; 6:30-8:00 PM intermediate/advanced $135. Saturday: 9:15-10:00 AM novice $109; 10:00-11:00 AM beginner/intermediate $119; 11:00 AM-12:30 PM intermediate/advanced $135. Monthly tuition includes four classes. Fall Wednesday runs 9 September-25 November 2026 (12 classes). Fall Saturday runs 12 September-5 December 2026 (12 classes). In-person assessment is $30 for 45 minutes. The page names Woman International Master Tatiana Duarte Brea and Chesskiddo coaches. The homepage says Sit and Go runs 12:30-2:00 pm after Saturday classes.

  • Edison Public Library Chess Club, Children’s Room, Main Library, 340 Plainfield Avenue, Edison, NJ 08817, beside the train station. Wednesday 28 October 2026, 6:00-7:00 pm. Ages 6-11, all levels, casual games. Registration is not required. Space is first-come. No fee published on its site (checked 3 October 2026).

  • Fords Branch Chess Club, ages 7-13, Saturday 7 November 2026, 10:30 AM-12:00 PM Eastern, instructor Clay Miller. Bring a board or use the library’s. The branch page places it at 211 Ford Avenue, Fords, NJ 08863, with turns from Route 1, the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike. One sentence says registration is encouraged but not required. The seat box says registration is required and showed 7 seats. No fee published on its site (checked 3 October 2026).

  • Princeton Public Library drop-in chess, Story Room, third floor, 65 Witherspoon Street, Princeton, NJ 08542. Saturday 24 October 2026, 3:00-4:00 pm, grades 2-6. The page says the second and fourth Saturday, and that the schedule can change. Impact Chess volunteers lead it. No registration. No fee published on its site (checked 3 October 2026).

  • Impact Chess, current list: Monday 6:30-8:00 pm at Plainsboro Public Library, all skill levels. No street and no age minimum on that line. No fee published on its site (checked 3 October 2026). The same page also describes Saturday hours at Princeton Public Library that do not match the library’s 24 October event. Use the library page for Princeton.

These are listed in no particular order and inclusion is not an endorsement.

What in-person chess classes cost in Edison, NJ#

The prices below are the providers’ own figures for Piscataway, East Windsor, and Princeton. Library pages do not print a fee.

On 3 October 2026, Kings and Queens priced New Jersey in-person sections by the month: Beginner 1 at $140, Pawn 2, Pawn 3, and Knight at $180, and Bishop at $240. Rook and King/Queen rows on that view were in North Carolina, so they stay out of a local budget. The schedule does not say how many classes the month includes, so this guide does not divide $140 by four. Private coaches are listed from $50 a session. That is a floor. Budget bands on the same form are not a fee table, and they are not quoted here.

Super Sundays, including 18 October 2026, is a separate $45 entry at 1030 Stelton Road, Suite 201, Piscataway. Sections start at 1000 USCF. Players under 1000 are encouraged to play Sunday Rapids instead. Do not add $45 to $140 and call the sum a class price.

Chesskiddo states that monthly tuition includes four classes, so a per-class figure is allowed:

  • Novice, $109 a month. $109 divided by 4 is $27.25 a class.
  • Beginner/intermediate, $119 a month. $119 divided by 4 is $29.75 a class.
  • Intermediate/advanced, $135 a month. $135 divided by 4 is $33.75 a class.

Those are per class, not per hour. The meetings last 45, 60 and 90 minutes. Fall Wednesday is 12 classes, three blocks of four, but semester payment is set at registration, so this guide does not treat three times $109 as a semester total. The in-person assessment is $30 once. A Sunday row at $109 a month on the same page is virtual. Leave it out of an in-person budget.

Free and low-cost options#

Edison Public Library, the Fords branch, and Princeton Public Library are the no-tuition hours. Impact Chess’s Monday line is the nonprofit drop-in. “No fee published” means the page did not state a price on 3 October 2026.

The Edison hour on 28 October is open play for ages 6-11. The page does not name a coach. The room is first-come. Fords on 7 November is 90 minutes with Clay Miller named, one date rather than a semester. Register, because the seat box and the welcome sentence disagree. The branch page gives turns from Route 1, Parkway exits 129 and 130, and Turnpike exit 11, and it does not give minutes.

Princeton’s 24 October hour is grades 2-6 with volunteers. Impact Chess’s events page describes a different Saturday window there, 3:30-5:00 pm every Saturday for grades 1-6. Follow the library’s dated event. Impact’s Monday 6:30-8:00 pm line names Plainsboro Public Library only. A request for that library’s 2026 calendar returned a security check rather than the event, so the Monday time is Impact’s description alone. These hours show whether a child likes the game before a $109 or $140 month. They do not describe a rating path.

Tournaments and ratings for kids in New Jersey#

A class fee does not buy a rating. The New Jersey State Chess Federation runs scholastic events, and those events require US Chess membership.

US Chess says a published regular, quick, or blitz rating needs at least four rated games at that time control. Until the monthly list prints it, the player is still unrated. The next month’s list is generated on the third Wednesday of the month before it is official. The FAQ illustrates the lag with a late-November 2013 example, which is not a 2026 date. The first 25 games are provisional. One short event can leave a child unrated for the next tournament.

A one-year Youth membership, for a player under 19 for the whole term, is $24. Two years is $45. The player must stay in that age band for the entire term.

The 2026 New Jersey K-12 Grade Championships are Sunday 22 November 2026 at Brookdale Community College, Student Life Center, 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ 07738, near lots 6 and 7, about one mile from Garden State Parkway exit 109A. It is a 5-round Swiss, G/30; d5. First round is 10:00 AM. Sections follow the child’s exact grade, kindergarten through grade 12. Online entry is $45 by 19 October 2026, $50 by 9 November, and $55 after that. On-site entry is $70. On 3 October the $45 window is still open. Bring a clock. Prizes include trophies for 10 individual places and three school teams in each section, and every player receives a trophy or a medal. A team is players in the same section at the same school. Sharing only a chess academy does not make a team.

$45 plus $24 is $69. That sum adds the early online entry to a one-year youth membership. Neither site prints $69. It leaves out a clock and any higher fee after 19 October.

The federation’s elementary and junior high page describes a K-9 event at the same Brookdale center, sections K-2, 3-5 and 6-9, as a 5-round Swiss, G/25; d5, with advance entry only. The text retrieved on 3 October 2026 does not give the event date, so the January and February fee lines on that page are not quoted here as a current bill.

Chesskiddo’s Sit and Go is 12:30-2:00 pm after Saturday classes. Kings and Queens’ Super Sundays page is the $45 Swiss at the Piscataway suite and points players under 1000 USCF to Sunday Rapids.

How we chose and checked these options#

We included in-person chess options for children that have a public page naming a venue in or near Edison, NJ and a current schedule, fee or session date. Every fact on this page comes from the provider’s own page or an official chess federation page, opened on 3 October 2026. Fees are copied as published. Where this guide turns a monthly or session fee into a per-class figure, it shows the sum. The options are not ranked, and no provider paid to be listed. ChessWize, which publishes this guide, teaches online only and appears separately as the online option.

A coach’s checklist for choosing#

  1. Drive the real hour. The retrieved beginner rows are Thursday at 5:30 PM in Piscataway and Sunday at 10:00 AM in East Windsor. Princeton groups are Wednesday from 5:00 PM and Saturday morning. Fords prints turns from Route 1, the Parkway, and the Turnpike, and it does not print minutes. Leave for a trial at the same time of day as the class.

  2. Read the name on the row. The Kings and Queens homepage names grandmasters as founders and head coach, and it says coaches are USCF-rated, with teaching certification. The Beginner 1 rows on 3 October 2026 named Fred Ivens and Joshua Hill. Bishop rows named Luis Bonilla and Joshua Hill. Ask who teaches the section you want. Chesskiddo names Tatiana Duarte Brea and Chesskiddo coaches, without putting her name on every slot. Fords names Clay Miller. Princeton names Impact Chess volunteers. Edison Public Library names no coach.

  3. Ask the class size. The Kings and Queens homepage and programs page do not describe the same group size, so neither figure is used here. Chesskiddo does not print a headcount. Fords showed 7 seats. Edison is first-come. A trial is how you see the room.

  4. Match the trial to the room. Kings and Queens’ first group class is free, with no credit card, and the homepage says in-person sessions are at the New Jersey and North Carolina campuses. Chesskiddo’s in-person placement is $30 for 45 minutes. A library hour shows whether your child will sit for chess. It does not show how the $140 or $109 class is taught.

  5. Keep three bills apart. Monthly tuition is not the $45 Super Sundays entry, and that entry starts at 1000 USCF. The 22 November state event is in Lincroft, off Parkway exit 109A, at $45 online through 19 October, plus $24 if a one-year youth membership fits. An academy roster is not a school team there.

In-person or online in Edison, NJ?#

An in-person class buys a room, a set time, and other children. The cost is the trip. Weeknight rows in Piscataway start while Route 1 is still busy. Princeton and Plainsboro are a separate drive, and the November state scholastic is in Lincroft, off Parkway exit 109A. Library hours drop the tuition and are not a weekly curriculum.

ChessWize, which publishes this guide, teaches online only and has no center in Edison. It is one labeled option, not a club in the list above. If you are choosing between the drive and a live lesson at home, read online vs offline chess classes before you pay a month of tuition.
