ChessWize is a live online chess class for children aged 5–15, offered to families in Ottawa. A named coach teaches on a video call and shared digital board; this is not an in-person branch.

Ottawa's chess scene gives the training somewhere to land. The Chess Federation of Canada rates play nationally, and this July the Canadian Youth Chess Championship came to the Nepean Sportsplex (July 6-10), co-organized by the federation and the Eastern Ontario Chess Association. One honest change: the RA Chess Club no longer operates as an RA club. The RA Centre still makes its rooms available to chess through independent rentals, and Eastern Ontario Chess Association events held there have drawn players locally, region-wide and, at times, nationally.
Chess in Ottawa: understanding youth tournament entry
Ottawa hosted the 2026 Canadian Youth Chess Championship, organised by the Eastern Ontario Chess Association. The 2026 edition was held 6-10 July at Nepean Sportsplex. The CFC sets the national qualification rule: a child needs to qualify, and the main method is a score of 50% or more in a CYCC Qualifier. Ask the federation which edition your child can prepare for.

How classes run

Who teaches my child, and are they rated?
Your child's coach is named before anything is booked: Hrdyansh Pandey, Tarun Gupta, and Aryan Pal. Assignment happens at the demo, so the person your child meets on that first call is the person who keeps teaching the term.

Batches are capped at six and matched by working level, with a synchronized 12-week plan per group; children who focus better alone take the 1:1 Analyst Protocol. Placement follows the level check, so an Ottawa batch is peers first and ages second, and the two formats can be compared before the term begins.

Is there a real curriculum from beginner to rated play?
The ladder runs from the board itself to rated play: beginners secure legal moves, complete games, opening principles, and basic tactics and endings; intermediate students learn candidate moves and positional clues; advanced work audits the child's own games and deepens calculation. Tournament prep and rating improvement have their own roadmaps, and the demo shows the entry rung.

How will I know it is working?
After every class a WhatsApp note reaches your phone naming what was covered, what needs work, and the single task for the week. Roadmap markers are observable, from finishing a legal game to explaining a candidate move, so you can follow the term without sitting in on every session.

Is it safe, and can I see the classes?
Classes are scheduled live calls with a named, vetted coach, never an open room or a video library. Batches cap at six, there is no open chat with strangers, and a parent can watch any session. Ottawa families can cancel a monthly plan within 48 hours of enrolling for a full refund. A pro-rated refund minus sessions attended remains until session three, after which the month is kept and later billing can be stopped. Is there a path to tournaments?
The RA Centre hosts Eastern Ontario Chess Association tournaments in Ottawa. That association organised the 2026 Canadian Youth Chess Championship at Nepean Sportsplex in July. A child qualifies for the national youth championship mainly by scoring 50% or more in a CFC-rated over-the-board qualifier. Students here reach a first tournament in about four months on average.
