Ottawa is the capital of Canada, and its families run on tight weekday schedules: school pickup, rinks, music lessons, a commute that swallows the evening. ChessWize removes the drive instead of adding one. The class is a live video call at your own table with a FIDE-rated coach who teaches from India. That is also why the staffed windows here are Eastern-time weekend mornings and the before-school hour; weekday after-school would land in the middle of the night for the coaching team. Your child logs in, plays real games, gets corrected in the moment, and is done before the school run.
The honest worry is screen time that teaches nothing. What answers it is a live coach who sees the move your child just played, asks what they were thinking, and sends them away with one clear thing to fix. A ChessWize parent said in a video review: "She wouldn't even play with her grandfather because she was afraid of losing. Six months in, she's the one challenging him." The same coach stays all term, so the Weekly WhatsApp report for every student comes from someone who knows the games behind it.
Money should be the easiest part to check. The 8-class starter pack costs about CA$36.49, and regular plans after it run from about CA$5.47 to about CA$14.60 per class depending on the plan; your card is charged the live exchange rate, so there is no separate Canadian price. Ottawa's chess scene gives the training somewhere to land. The Chess Federation of Canada rates play nationally, and this July the Canadian Youth Chess Championship came to the Nepean Sportsplex (July 6-10), co-organized by the federation and the Eastern Ontario Chess Association. One honest change: the RA Chess Club no longer operates as an RA club. The RA Centre still makes its rooms available to chess through independent rentals, and Eastern Ontario Chess Association events held there have drawn players locally, region-wide and, at times, nationally. Start with the demo at a Saturday-morning or pre-school slot, then decide whether the hour has earned its place.
Class times for Ottawa

Ottawa is on Eastern Time, and Ontario keeps daylight saving, so the mapping to India shifts by an hour twice a year. Saturday-morning cohorts run 8:00-11:00 AM ET, which reaches the coaching team at about 5:30-8:30 PM in India. The weekday lesson runs before school, 7:00-8:00 AM ET, or roughly 4:30-6:30 PM India time. Clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1, 2026; your child's local hour does not move, while the India-side mapping shifts. Beginner
- Learn the board and legal moves. The child practises setup, movement, captures, check, checkmate, castling, promotion, and en passant through playable examples. The coach checks understanding by changing the position.
- Finish a complete game. Once the rules are stable, the child plays guided games. The coach helps with a simple thinking routine but leaves enough space for the student to make and correct decisions.
- Use opening principles. Development, centre control, and king safety give the first moves a purpose. The child learns principles that work across many openings before studying a named repertoire.
- Find basic tactics and endings. Forks, pins, simple mates, and basic king-and-pawn endings turn rules into practical skill. Reviews stay focused on mistakes the beginner is ready to understand.
Intermediate
- Stabilise tactical vision. Pins, forks, skewers, discoveries, and removal of the defender are practised in mixed positions. The child must identify why a tactic works and what would stop it.
- Choose candidate moves. Instead of calculating the first attractive move, the student lists sensible choices. Checks, captures, threats, and improving moves become part of a deliberate search.
- Read positional clues. Open files, weak squares, pawn breaks, and poorly placed pieces help the child form a plan. Strategy stays connected to concrete moves rather than abstract rules.
- Link openings to endings. A compact repertoire produces familiar middlegames, while essential king-and-pawn and rook endings improve confidence when pieces come off the board.
Advanced
- Audit the player's game. Recent tournament and online games are grouped by error type. The coach establishes priorities and distinguishes one-off mistakes from patterns that need a training block.
- Deepen calculation. Exercises include candidate selection, comparison of resulting positions, defensive resources, and stopping points. Accuracy and evaluation matter more than the number of moves calculated.
- Refine repertoire and strategy. Opening files are tied to model positions and likely opponents. Middlegame work covers pawn structures, exchanges, initiative, and transitions rather than memorisation alone.
- Convert training into events. Pre-event preparation, clock plans, rest, and post-event review connect weekly lessons to competitive play. The plan changes as new game evidence appears.
How the first month starts
The level check establishes the starting point. Early lessons then use the first roadmap goal for that level: beginners learn the board and legal moves, intermediate players stabilise tactical vision, and advanced players audit recent games. The coach moves from that evidence instead of assigning a city-wide syllabus.
Practice and parent reporting
A beginner benefits from repetition with variation. Set up a king-in-check position in several ways, ask for all legal responses, or practise one mating pattern from both sides of the board. This confirms that the child understands the idea rather than remembers one diagram.
For visibility at home, the published commitment is Weekly WhatsApp report for every student, giving the family a regular account of what to practise next.

How child safety works
Every coach clears a multi-step hiring process, and background verification — police clearance plus a reference check — is completed before they teach a child. Classes are live lessons rather than recorded lesson libraries, parents may sit in on any session, and a parent or guardian should remain at home during classes for children under eight. Any laptop, desktop, or tablet with a stable internet connection and a webcam. Classes run on Zoom plus our own student platform for puzzles, homework, and progress tracking. Nothing to install — it all runs in the browser.

Can Indian coaches teach my child at a Canada-friendly time?
For Eastern-time Canada, yes — through the same two windows that work for the US East Coast: Saturday-morning cohorts (8–11 AM ET) and an early-morning weekday slot before school (7–8 AM ET). Weekday after-school falls in the middle of the Indian night, so we do not offer it.
Do you serve Vancouver / Pacific-time Canada yet?
Not yet. The pilot covers Eastern Time (Toronto, Ottawa and nearby). Pacific-time overlap with Indian coaching hours is too thin to promise a dependable weekly slot, so we would rather wait than over-promise.
How does billing work from Canada?
ChessWize keeps one price list in Indian rupees (from INR 2,500 for 8 classes). Your card is simply charged the equivalent in your local currency at checkout, so there is no separate or inflated overseas rate.
Is there a free trial?

How do you keep classes safe for children?

When can an Ottawa child actually attend a class?
Two windows are staffed for Eastern Time: Saturday morning cohorts from 8:00 to 11:00 AM, and a weekday before-school hour from 7:00 to 8:00 AM, which ends before the school run. Weekday after-school hours would be the middle of the night for coaches in India, so they are not offered. One recurring slot is fixed at the demo.
What does a class cost a family in Ottawa?

Younger children get short, varied tasks and stop while they are still keen. The level check decides the starting rung, so a beginner is not pushed into material beyond the first games.
How does the free demo work?
You book a 30-minute slot at an Ottawa-friendly Eastern time. A coach watches your child solve a few positions and play, says where they stand, and recommends a batch or private lessons. You agree the weekly schedule on the same call, no payment details are requested beforehand, and if the fit is wrong nothing is owed.
What happens to class times when the clocks change?
Ontario stays on daylight saving. Clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and spring forward again on the second Sunday of March. The local hour you agreed does not move; the India-side mapping shifts by one, which is why the IST times are quoted as approximate. Your child's routine is unchanged at the November changeover.
Where can an Ottawa child play over the board?
The Chess Federation of Canada rates tournaments across the country, and this July Ottawa hosted the Canadian Youth Chess Championship at the Nepean Sportsplex, organized with the Eastern Ontario Chess Association. The RA Chess Club no longer runs as an RA club, but the RA Centre still hosts association events through facility rentals, and a trained child can meet unfamiliar opponents and clocks there.
Can lessons run in Hindi for our family?
Yes. Lessons can be taught in English or Hindi for ages 5-15, which many Ottawa families with roots in India prefer for a young child. Hindi matching depends on which coach is free in your chosen Eastern-time window, so mention it at the demo and the pairing is confirmed before anything is paid.
How will I know the classes are working?
A weekly WhatsApp report for every student lands after class with what was taught, what needs work, and one thing to practise; you do not need to play chess to read it. Between reports the markers are observable: finishing a legal game, choosing candidate moves calmly, reviewing a loss without drama.
What do we need at home before the first class?
A laptop or tablet, steady internet, and a quiet table; you do not need to own a board to start, since the class plays on a shared screen, though a real set helps between sessions. A parent can sit nearby for the first minutes with a younger child, and a notebook for the coach's one task is enough on day one.
What if we stop, or the fit is wrong?
Unused sessions in a pack are refundable, so stopping does not forfeit the fee. If the format feels wrong early, say so: batches and private lessons suit different children, and testing the other track in the first weeks is the fair comparison. Whether your child brings up chess between sessions tells you more than whether each lesson ends in a cheer.
