What this Calgary class is
ChessWize is a live online chess class for children aged 5–15, offered to families in Calgary. A named coach teaches on a video call and shared digital board; this is not an in-person branch.
ChessWize is online only and has no local centre in Calgary.
Who the format fits
It fits families with a beginner through a rated player who can keep a weekly class with the same coach, want a group capped at six or a one-to-one lesson, and want one regular coach. It does not fit a family that needs a walk-in classroom in Calgary.
A steady chess hour in a Calgary week
ChessWize runs live online only, so Calgary has no centre to drive to and no extra trip in a week that already has enough. Your child joins a video call from your own table with a coach who teaches from India, and the hour asks something of them: pause, calculate, explain a move out loud. The training also has somewhere to land. How classes run

The coach teaching your child is named up front: Hrdyansh Pandey, Tarun Gupta, and Aryan Pal. No Calgary-specific pairing is promised in advance; the level-check call is where your child meets the actual coach, and you can look a rating up before that call.

How many children share the coach?
Batches hold 4-6 similarly-rated students on one synchronized 12-week cycle, so the group moves at one pace instead of five. A child who needs the room to himself can take the 1:1 Analyst Protocol instead. Placement happens after the level check, so the format is chosen on what the coach actually saw rather than on a form answer.

Is there a real curriculum from beginner to rated play?
The ladder is explicit. Beginners secure the board, legal moves, and complete games before opening principles and basic tactics; intermediate work covers candidate moves, positional clues, and opening-to-endgame links; advanced students audit their own games and deepen calculation. Tournament prep and rating improvement each have a roadmap of their own, and the demo shows where a Calgary child enters.

How will I know it is working?
A Weekly WhatsApp report for every student arrives after class, naming what was covered, what needs work, and the one thing to practise. You do not need to play chess to read it. Progress markers stay visible in plain terms: a finished legal game, a candidate move explained calmly, a loss reviewed without drama.

Is it safe, and can I see the classes?
A class is a scheduled call with the coach your child already knows, never an open room or a recorded-video library. Batches are capped at 6, there is no open chat with strangers, and a parent can sit in on any session. The child-safety page covers the checks coaches go through and where a concern goes.

Can we try before paying?
The Complimentary 30-min level check before you commit is the first step: a coach watches your child solve positions and play, then tells you in plain words whether a batch or 1:1 fits and what starting level your child is at.

What if we stop?
Until class three a pro-rated refund minus sessions attended still applies; later the month is kept and cancelling stops future charges. A session moves around exams subject to the coach's calendar, leftover term sessions can still be finished after 7 days, and the free level check exists so a wrong start costs nothing.

Is there a path to tournaments?
The Calgary Junior Chess Centre promotes junior chess in the Calgary area and is affiliated with the Alberta Chess Association, which hosts the Alberta Youth Chess Championship and the Alberta Chess Challenge. The 2026 Canadian Junior Chess Championship was awarded to Calgary. Ask those organisers about later junior events, and check the chosen event's requirements. On average, Calgary students reach a first tournament in about four months.

What do I have to do at home?
