Magnus Carlsen made Javokhir Sindarov his favourite against Gukesh D in their 2026 world title match while speaking in Bengaluru on 10 September. His assessment, reported the next day, left room for the champion to change the contest early.

India Today’s PTI report on 11 September said Carlsen wanted Gukesh to approach the match as an opportunity. He felt that treating it chiefly as a title defence would add pressure. Carlsen pointed to Gukesh’s play in 2024 as evidence of the level he could recover.

Carlsen sees scope for an early shift

The Times of India’s separate report, by Biju Babu Cyriac on 11 September, placed the comments after a Global Chess League match. It reported Carlsen’s view that Gukesh’s peak could equal or surpass Sindarov’s, despite the challenger entering as favourite.

Carlsen saw confidence as central. India Today reported his assessment that an early Sindarov lead would make the task much harder for Gukesh. An early lead for the Indian could instead make Gukesh the strong favourite. The same report said it might take little to unsettle Sindarov and lift Gukesh’s belief.

In the Times of India account, Carlsen also questioned using a short classical match to determine the strongest player. He argued that draws could leave a small number of decisive games carrying considerable weight.

Geneva hosts the title contest

FIDE announced Geneva, Switzerland, as host on 28 July 2026. Gukesh enters as champion, while Sindarov earned his place by winning the 2026 Candidates in Cyprus.
