Chess Academies in Mumbai (2026): Offline Options, Fees & How to Choose

Mumbai takes its chess seriously. This is the city of GM Pravin Thipsay — Mumbai’s first Grandmaster — and more recently of GM Aditya Mittal, who became India’s 77th GM at sixteen in December 2022, and GM Aarav Dengla, India’s 93rd, in February 2026. It also hosts the annual Mumbai Mayor’s Cup international open. So the offline academy scene here is real, and this guide names the established centres with only the facts each one publishes, dated. The offline scene: named academies in Mumbai#

Facts below were taken from each academy’s own public pages on 5 August 2026. Always confirm current details directly — schedules and fees change.

• South Mumbai Chess Academy (SMCA) — founded in 1996 by FM Balaji Guttula, who by his own account started with a rented room and six students; co-founded and directed with Durga Nagesh Guttula. The academy lists 10+ centres across Mumbai, groups children by skill level rather than age, and takes students from age 4. Fees are not published — quoted on enquiry.
• Indian Chess School — founded by Praful Zaveri, a FIDE Instructor (2007), FIDE Trainer (2020) and International Arbiter (2023), author of The Chess Course (1999), which has sold over 100,000 copies. Headquartered in Dahisar (East) with a training-and-tournament centre at Borivali (W). Zaveri has also organized the 360 ONE Wealth (formerly IIFL Wealth) International Chess Tournament since 2015, which incorporates the Mumbai Junior (Under-13) event.
• ChessGuru Mumbai — founded by Amit Panchal, running since 2005, with coaching across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai in four formats: online 1:1, group classes, in-academy coaching, and at-home private coaching. No published fees.
• Mumbai Chess Academy — a Mahim centre (Taikalwadi Road) running online and offline classes from beginner to advanced, with a free trial class advertised. No published fees.
• Beyond these, aggregators list many neighbourhood coaching classes from Borivali to Chembur, often run inside housing societies. Quality varies widely at that layer — the checklist below matters most there.

What offline coaching costs here#

Mumbai is striking for how little is published: none of the four established academies above listed class fees on their own sites when we checked on 5 August 2026. SMCA says openly that fees depend on group vs private coaching and to contact them; the others quote after an enquiry or demo. That is not a red flag by itself — but it means the burden of comparison is on you. Ask every academy on your shortlist for the per-session cost in writing (monthly fee ÷ sessions per month), and compare like with like: a ₹3,000/month batch meeting twice a week is a very different price from the same fee for once a week. A coach’s checklist for choosing any academy#

1. Who teaches the weekly batch? The titled name on the banner and the coach in the room are often different people. Ask directly.
2. Batch size. Twelve children with one coach is supervised play, not coaching. Six or fewer is where individual correction happens.
3. Feedback loop. If you can’t name what your child learned last week, neither can the academy. Ask how progress is reported to parents.
4. A real trial class. Any confident academy lets your child sit one class before you pay a term. Watch whether the coach corrects your child specifically.

Mumbai’s circuit is a genuine advantage#

Whichever academy you pick, your child will not lack over-the-board practice here. The Mumbai Mayor’s Cup runs annually as an international open under the Mumbai Suburban District Chess Association, the Maharashtra Chess Association and the AICF, and the 360 ONE Wealth tournament has run its Mumbai Junior (Under-13) section since 2015. Ask any shortlisted academy how it prepares students for these — a centre plugged into the local circuit is worth more than one that only runs internal classes.

Online vs offline in Mumbai specifically#

The real cost of an offline academy in this city is the commute. A Kandivali family travelling to a South Mumbai batch twice a week — by local train or the Western Express Highway — spends more time in transit than in class. That is the honest case for live online coaching: the same fixed weekly slot and the same coach, with zero travel, while Mumbai’s packed weekend circuit still gives your child real tournament boards.
