Upstep Academy Fees (2026): What They Publish — and What They Don't

Upstep Academy does not publish a standard kids-class fee. They quote after a free demo and a counselling call. The only rupee figures on the public site belong to GAP, a 12-month elite cohort with rating floors — not the beginner or intermediate group your child would join after a first lesson.

Google currently treats /chess-coaching-levels/ as the answer to “Upstep academy fee structure.” That page is a format table. I fetched it on 13 August 2026. There is no money on it.

How much does Upstep Academy cost?#

For the kids class a parent is usually buying: they will tell you on the counselling call. There is no honest monthly SKU I can print without inventing one.

Do not budget from search snippets or from an AI Overview. Those answers quote monthly dollar and rupee bands for Upstep kids classes and then staple the real GAP figures onto the same list. The bands do not appear on Upstep’s homepage, levels, beginner or India pages. The closest thing on their site is a generic market range in the USA-page FAQ — $40 to $140 a month — after which they say they consider themselves an affordable option. That is not an Upstep kids-class SKU. I am not repeating snippet bands here.

If a counsellor gives you a number, get it in writing with four fields: batch size, sessions in the pack, GST in or extra, refund or pause. Then divide.

The one price Upstep does publish: GAP, not a kids class#

Read this before the numbers. GAP (Grandmaster Accelerator Programme) is a year-long, rating-gated cohort. It is not the Beginner / Advanced Beginner / Intermediate ladder, and ₹1,05,600 is not what a first-year group class costs.

The same page lists 216 hours of yearly exposure, four Anand masterclasses, and a titled-player substitute if the named GM is away.

A child who cannot yet castle consistently is not a GAP candidate. If a counsellor mixes GAP numbers into a foundation quote, ask them to separate the two products on the same email.

How to turn any verbal quote into a comparable number#

This is a method, not an Upstep price. It sits here so a number from any academy does not get read as the answer to “How much does Upstep Academy cost?”

Suppose any academy quotes ₹18,000 for three months, two classes a week, GST extra. That is the shape of quote I see most weeks; it is not an Upstep figure.

Three months at two classes a week is about 24 sessions. ₹18,000 ÷ 24 = ₹750 a session before tax. Add 18% GST and you are near ₹885. Now you have something you can set next to academies that print a table.

Change any one input — 8 students instead of 4, GST included, a 12-month prepay — and the comparison flips. The headline “₹18,000” told you nothing until you did that division.

How expensive is chess coaching?#

Among Indian online academies that do print a table, group coaching in this set works out roughly ₹300–₹700 per session once you divide packages by class count. That band is a yardstick for the quote you receive. It is not an Upstep estimate.

What to take into the counselling call#

1. Written per-session price for the exact format (1, 4 or 8) they placed your child in.
2. Sessions per month and whether holidays are deducted.
3. GST — included or extra. ChessGaja’s table is the reminder that this line moves the payable amount.
4. Refund or pause on unused sessions. GAP is explicitly non-refundable; standard kids terms are unpublished.
5. Who teaches — name and FIDE ID — and whether that person is the weekly coach.
6. Recordings / makeup — the India FAQ says this depends on the plan.

Is Upstep worth the quote you get? That is a fit question, not a spreadsheet cell — founder, formats, Anand-on-the-certificate and the Google rating belong on the review page, not here. This page stops at the invoice.
