How we hire ChessWize coaches

Every coach who appears on this page passed three filters. We don't run open applications — we recruit by trial session with real children, then verify every claim independently.

  1. Editorial photo representing step 1: Active FIDE-rated tournament play

    Active FIDE-rated tournament play

Only coaches who have played FIDE-rated events in the last 24 months are considered. We verify every applicant's FIDE ID against the public ratings database (ratings.fide.com). No coach on our roster has ever taught chess without being a tournament player themselves.

  2. Editorial photo representing step 2: Patience under repeated questioning

    Patience under repeated questioning

We hire by paid trial session with three real children — typically a 6-year-old, a 10-year-old, and a 13-year-old. We watch how the candidate handles the same question asked five different ways. The coaches on this page are the ones who answered question five with the same calm as question one.

  3. Editorial photo representing step 3: Written parent-report quality

    Written parent-report quality

Every parent at ChessWize gets a weekly WhatsApp summary written by their coach. Before hire, candidates write three sample reports against three sample lessons. We grade for clarity, specificity, and whether a non-chess-playing parent would actually understand what their child practised that week.

Background verification (police clearance + reference check) is performed once a coach passes all three filters. Status is reflected in real time on every coach card.

The ChessWize coaching methodology

Tarun (founder) designed the curriculum every ChessWize coach teaches. It's structured in four phases mapped to FIDE rating bands. Your child enters at the phase that matches their current strength.

Chess board imagery representing the Beginner Foundation phase, 1400–1600 FIDE

Beginner Foundation

1400–1600 FIDE

Solidify openings (1–2 systems for white and black), middlegame planning, and basic endgame technique (K+Q, K+R, opposition).

Chess board imagery representing the Tournament Ready phase, 1600–1800 FIDE

Tournament Ready

1600–1800 FIDE

Tactical sharpness under the clock, opening repertoire expansion, calculation depth of 3–5 moves, and time management in classical games.

Chess board imagery representing the Advanced Strategy phase, 1800–2000 FIDE

Advanced Strategy

1800–2000 FIDE

Positional play, prophylaxis, deep calculation, tournament psychology, and post-game analysis discipline.

Chess board imagery representing the Mastery & Title Track phase, 2000+ FIDE

Mastery & Title Track

2000+ FIDE

GM-track preparation, sparring with titled players, deep opening prep, and dynamic endgame mastery.

Every session is 1-on-1 or small group, live (30 mins), on Lichess study or Chess.com classroom. We also offer a dedicated 1:1 Coaching Mode for parents who want exclusive attention every session. After every session your coach posts a structured WhatsApp summary: what was covered, what improved, what next session will focus on. You can read more about how we structure session time and what FIDE rating bands actually mean for a child in our learn centre.

ChessWize tracking platform

Built-in Progress Tracking — Every Session

Your child's improvement isn't a guess. The ChessWize dashboard shows exactly what they practiced, how long, and how well.

  • Attempt tracking

Every puzzle, every position, every game logged. Coaches see what your child tried and where they got stuck.

  • Time-on-task

Seconds per move, total practice minutes, session length. Effort gets visible.

  • Accuracy scoring

Move quality graded against engine analysis. Beginner-friendly: only the moves that actually mattered are flagged.

  • Performance analytics

Tactical pattern recognition, opening repertoire coverage, endgame technique — broken down per child.

  • Minute-level progress

Teachers see weekly trend lines: are tactics getting faster? Is calculation depth growing? Decisions made on data, not vibes.

Parents get a weekly digest. Coaches get a live operating dashboard. Every kid gets specific feedback — not generic "work harder."

What each coach believes about teaching chess

  • "Chess is a powerful life skill. My job is to teach kids how to think, not just how to move pieces."

Hrdyansh Pandey Co-Founder · Lead Coach
  • "ChessWize didn't begin as a business — it started with a single 'yes' to a parent after a district win. The mission is the same now as it was then: better thinkers, not just better players."

    Tarun Gupta Founder & CEO
  • "If a 6-year-old can't explain it back to me in their own words, I haven't taught it yet."

Aryan Pal Coach & Content Lead
  • "Real progress comes from sharper calculation and disciplined opening preparation — my job is to bridge high-level play and structured, repeatable coaching."

Rishabh Verma FIDE-Rated International Player & Coach
  • "Every student — beginner or advanced — deserves a structured path through the whole game: openings, middlegames, endgames, and the confidence to compete."

Coach FAQ

Twelve questions parents ask before booking a demo. Honest answers; we'd rather lose the booking than mis-set expectations.

Are all ChessWize coaches FIDE-rated?

Yes. Every coach on the ChessWize roster has an active FIDE rating and a verifiable FIDE profile (linked from their coach page). We list peak rating, current rating, and FIDE ID transparently — no estimates, no marketing claims.

Will my child have the same coach for the entire programme?

Yes. Same coach every session — no rotation, no handoffs. The coach assigned at your demo is the coach who teaches the entire programme. If your child outgrows their bracket, we move them up explicitly with parent consent — never silently.

How are ChessWize coaches selected?

Three signals: (1) active FIDE-rated tournament play in the last 24 months — only active players coach here. (2) Demonstrated patience under repeated questioning — we hire by trial session with real children. (3) Written communication — every parent gets a weekly WhatsApp report, so writing skill matters as much as chess skill.

What languages do the coaches teach in?

Every coach teaches in English and Hindi. Aryan also teaches in Bengali. We try to match families with a coach who speaks the home language — particularly important for early learners under age 8.

Can I change coaches if my child isn't progressing?

Yes — and we'll suggest it ourselves before you ask. The weekly parent report includes a progression score; if it stalls for three consecutive weeks, the lead coach (Tarun) personally reviews the situation with you. Switching coaches is free.

Do ChessWize coaches teach for tournaments specifically?

Yes. Tournament prep is one of our most-booked tracks. Hrdyansh in particular runs an explicit pre-tournament protocol: three weeks out we drill repertoire gaps, two weeks out we play training games at tournament time-control, the week of we sharpen tactics and rest. Coaches review tournament games with the student between rounds.

What's the difference between a ChessWize coach and a YouTube chess channel?

A YouTube channel teaches everyone the same thing. A ChessWize coach teaches your child the specific thing they're missing — diagnosed live, in 1-on-1 sessions, with weekly accountability to you the parent.

How do I know my coach is verified?

Every coach page links to their public FIDE profile (ratings.fide.com), and where applicable to their Lichess and Chess.com accounts. Background-verification status is shown on every coach card. If you want to validate independently, you can check the FIDE ID directly.

What ages do ChessWize coaches teach?

Ages 5 to 15. Aryan specialises in 5–10 (foundation track). Hrdyansh teaches across the full range with strength in tournament-prep cohorts. Tarun handles senior 1-on-1 (typically 1400+ FIDE) and curriculum design.

Can my child's coach prepare them for AICF or school tournaments?

Yes. AICF-rated event preparation is a standard track. Coaches also work directly with school chess teams — many of our students captain their school's chess team and qualify for inter-school finals.

Are sessions live?

Always live. Every session is 1-on-1 or small group, live (30 mins) over Lichess study or Chess.com classroom. We also offer a dedicated 1:1 Coaching Mode for parents who want exclusive attention every session.

How long is a coaching demo / level check?

30 minutes. Complimentary. The coach plays a position with your child, identifies their current rating band, and writes you a one-page diagnosis covering: current strengths, immediate gaps, and a recommended programme. No sales pressure — you decide whether to enrol after reading the diagnosis.

Have a different question? Send us a note — we reply on WhatsApp within 10 minutes during work hours.
