Upstep Academy Review for Parents (2026): Formats, Founder, Verdict

This page is for a parent deciding whether to enrol a child. It is not a review of Upstep as an employer. Job-site listings that climb the same search results are written for coaches looking for work, not for the class your child would sit in.

Upstep Academy is a real, Mumbai-based online chess school that has been operating since 2020. It sells live classes for children, a five-level foundation curriculum, a free 1:1 demo, and certificates it says are signed by GM Viswanathan Anand. That combination is enough to put it on a shortlist. It is not enough to enrol on the brochure. The pages I fetched on 13 August 2026 are clear on format and silent on the standard kids-class fee.

What is Upstep Academy and who runs it?#

Upstep describes itself as a global online academy for children, with country landing pages from India to the US, UK, UAE and Australia. The about page (fetched 13 August 2026) says the academy has been operational since 2020 and names Abhijit Hatkar as founder and CEO.

His public FIDE profile (ID 5041023, fetched the same day) lists standard rating 2001, currently inactive, federation India, plus FIDE Arbiter and FIDE Instructor. The about page also calls him peak 2053; the live FIDE card I opened shows 2001. I am using the card.

Google’s knowledge panel on the India review SERP (12 August 2026) lists a Mumbai office in Andheri East. That is enough to say a Mumbai HQ exists. I did not independently walk the pin.

Homepage student stories name children in Rajasthan, Mumbai, Gorakhpur, Australia and Singapore with specific tournament results. Those write-ups are academy marketing. Treat them as claims Upstep chose to publish, not as an audited results ledger.

What class formats does Upstep actually publish?#

The India page (13 August 2026) is the cleanest parent-facing summary: classes in small groups of 4–8 students, or 1-on-1, a Free 1:1 Demo Session, and a heading FIDE Rated Coaches & Grandmasters. It also says foundation classes are taught by experienced coaches, and that International Masters and Grandmasters apply to the Grandmaster Accelerator Programme (GAP), not to the first-year batch.

The coaching-levels page (same day) splits that 4–8 line into three products. None of the three has a price column.

All three run 2 days a week, live online. The same table is repeated on the beginner-level page. The India FAQ says they usually timetable two classes a week so chess does not pile on top of school.

Two age lines disagree, and I am not picking a winner. The homepage demo block says 5 to 15 years. Coaching-levels allows 4 to 15 for 1:1 and 5 to 15 for groups. The beginner page repeats the 4+ line. If you have a four-year-old, ask which product they will actually place the child in.

What sits around the live hour, from the same pages:

• Game analysis, live play, tests and assessment inside the level.
• A dedicated relationship manager (homepage).
• Quarterly parent-teacher meetings and performance reports (India FAQ).
• Recordings or makeup classes “depending on the plan” if a session is missed (India FAQ — get the plan in writing).
• Practice on Lichess or Chess.com, plus Zoom. They prefer a laptop or desktop over a phone.

Curriculum is five foundation levels (Beginner → Advanced Beginner → Intermediate → Advanced Part 1 → Advanced Part 2) then Master / Pro Master. Completing a level earns a certificate. That structure is ordinary for a large Indian academy. What matters in the room is whether the person teaching your child can leave the script when the child stalls — which you only see in the demo.

How much does Upstep Academy cost?#

Upstep does not publish a standard kids-class fee. I fetched the homepage, coaching-levels, beginner, India and about pages on 13 August 2026. None of them carries a rupee or dollar SKU for Beginner through Master. https://www.upstepacademy.com/pricing/ returned HTTP 404 the same day.

The sales path they do publish is: free demo → level assessment → counselling → enrolment. The price appears on that counselling call, not on the site.

The one public price on the domain is GAP, a 12-month elite cohort with rating floors (FIDE 1400–1800, or online-rating substitutes). That is not the beginner group. The figures, the 404s, and the questions to get in writing are on what Upstep publishes for fees — and what it does not.

Divide the quote by session count before you compare it to anyone else.

Is Upstep Academy accredited?#

No. Nothing I fetched is a government recognition, an AICF school licence, or an Ofsted-style inspection.

What they publish is certification and inspiration by GM Viswanathan Anand, and level-completion certificates they say are signed and inspired by him (homepage and India page, 13 August 2026). GAP separately lists 4 live masterclasses by GM Viswanathan Anand.

That is a brand relationship. It is not “Anand teaches your child’s Tuesday slot.” The India FAQ is explicit that IMs and GMs sit on GAP. Foundation is a trained coach bench. Ask in the demo: “If we enrol this week, is the person on this call the weekly coach, and what is their FIDE ID?”

Is Upstep Academy fully online?#

The product on the site is live online. Sessions are on Zoom; homework and practice games go to Lichess or Chess.com; the beginner FAQ says the live online session is the main offering.

Google still lists a Mumbai office, and a separate “offline” Facebook property appears in search. I did not find a public timetable for walk-in kids batches on the programme URLs above. If a physical centre matters to you, ask for the address, the batch cap in that room, and whether the online coach and the offline coach are the same person.

What do the Google reviews actually say?#

The only review count I will print is the live Google Business Profile element on the India SERP: 4.8 out of 5 from 3,275 Google reviews on 12 August 2026 (place_id=ChIJpxhzMxy25zsRTh4jLwnNN1U). Directory sites and Instagram “3,000 reviews” lines disagree with that number; they are not GBP, so they stay off this page.

A 4.8 from thousands of reviews is strong social proof. It does not tell you batch size, refund terms, or who teaches. I will not assert sales-pressure or billing complaints from search summaries — those sources stay off this page, same rule as the directory review counts. Ask on the counselling call: how many follow-up calls should you expect, and what happens if you want to pause after month one?

Is Upstep Academy worth it?#

Worth it if you want a large, structured live academy with published 1 / 4 / 8 batch sizes, a relationship manager, internal tournaments, and an Anand-signed level certificate — and you are comfortable taking the fee after a 20-minute demo and a counselling call.

Not the right first call if you need a public price list before you give anyone a phone number, if you want a hard 1:4 cap written down before you book, or if you need a named coach guaranteed for the whole level. None of those last two is a published promise on the pages I fetched.

What should you check in the Upstep demo?#

The homepage demo block (13 August 2026): ages 5–15, live one-on-one, 20 minutes, device plus internet. After that comes a level assessment and a counselling session. Twenty minutes is short. Use it on the coach, not on the brand film.

1. Who is in the room? Write down the coach’s name and FIDE ID. Ask whether that person is on the weekly calendar if you enrol today. At this scale, a sales-facing demo coach is a live risk.
2. Diagnosis before teaching. A useful 20 minutes spends the first half finding out what the child already knows — “show me how the knight moves from here” — not delivering a polished Italian Game.
3. The first wrong answer. Note the exact sentence when the child misses. “No, next” is move-teaching. “Most kids play that because the bishop looks active — let’s see the next check” is thinking-teaching. That sentence predicts month three better than the Anand logo.
4. Batch and plan, in writing, after the call. Confirm 1, 4 or 8. Confirm sessions per month. Confirm GST. Confirm recordings and refund. If the counselling follow-up is a template that never names your child, that is data.

Who is Upstep a good fit for?#

Upstep fits a family that wants a big, process-driven academy — demo, assessment, counsellor, relationship manager — and likes the idea of a printed level certificate with Anand’s name on it.

Look elsewhere if the child needs a published fee before the first call, a promised single coach for a year, or a group smaller than four with that cap on the website rather than in a counsellor’s email. A four-year-old is also a special case until they tell you which age line applies.
